Yoga…Where to begin?
It can be daunting looking at yoga pictures online. Personally, they make me not want to step foot into a studio! A lot of the pics are just for show and likes though friend, so don’t be discouraged by the instagram models that were bendy before they even began! When you’re starting yoga, here’s what’s important to keep in mind.
Grab your gear - Grab a mat, maybe grippy yoga socks if you like your feet covered, and grab some props like blocks and a strap. These will all be so helpful to keep you safe and keep the poses and variations accessible to you. All of these items can be found in stores like Target, Walmart, and of course a ton of spots online. I’ve linked my faves HERE for you.
Find a teacher - Try out different classes or find different teachers online and see who resonates with you. Not all personalities mesh and that’s ok! You want to find a teacher whose class you enjoy, feel safe in, and can learn from. I’ve been to many yoga classes with many teachers in the past 13 years that I’ve been practicing and I’ll be honest… they’re not all my favorite.
Find a style that works for you - There are a ton of styles of yoga! Try different classes and even studios to find the vibe that works for you. I’ve compiled a post with information on different styles of yoga here so you can read through and search for a local studio or find a teacher/style you like online. I trained in the hatha/vinyasa style which is a nice umbrella for a bunch of different styles.
Take it slow - A beginner series (if offered) is a great place to begin. Throwing yourself into an advanced class will definitely turn you away. Take it slow, take it easy, and be kind to yourself when you’re learning something new. It’s all going to take time (building flexibility, remembering flows, postures, and breathing styles, etc) so take it easy, keep an open mind, and have a sense of humor. The key to finding balance is falling out of it, so be prepared to wobble and roll! It’s all part of the experience!
